How To Check Coolant Levels

Coolant Car Check

What is coolant, and what does it do for my vehicle? Coolant is an automotive fluid that regulates the temperature of your engine. Engine coolant won’t freeze below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and it won’t overheat above 212 degrees Fahrenheit, so it keeps your car running smoothly through all four seasons in Griffin. When your coolant levels drop, your car’s performance and safety are compromised. Find out how to check your coolant levels at home, and learn more service tips with Volume Chevrolet!

Where is Coolant Located?

When you look under the hood of your car, you’ll want to look for the coolant reservoir. There’s no need to open up the cap or use a dipstick; just check the markings on the side of the reservoir. If your coolant level reaches the “full” marking, there’s nothing that you need to do. If your coolant is low, open the reservoir cap to add more fluid. This is also a good time to check your hoses but ensure your engine is fully cool before poking around. Read your owner’s manual and pick up coolant at our parts department if needed. We can help you choose the right formula.

What Does Bad Coolant Look Like?

Just like your motor oil and transmission fluid, coolant eventually needs to be replaced. So, how do you know that your coolant has gone bad? Chevrolet coolant is thicker than water and thinner than oil. So if the coolant appears sludge-like, schedule your service. This could mean that you have an internal gasket leak. The color of your coolant can also tell you a lot about your car. Coolant can come in colors ranging from blue to green to yellow to red. So if your coolant looks brown or colorless, that’s also a reason to visit the service center.
