Car Battery Installation
If you are not sure about how to install a car battery, simply follow the steps listed below. Put the car in park and activate the parking brake. The engine should be off. Pop the hood open and find where the battery is located.
- Use the wrench to loosen the nut that secures the black cable (negative cable) to the battery.
- After the nut has been loosened, you can twist and pull the cable off. If the nut is stuck, do not try to force it with a screwdriver or a different tool. Keep trying to loosen it with the wrench until the cable can be removed.
- Follow the same steps to remove the red battery cable from the positive terminal.
- Loosen then remove the battery hold-down clamp.
- Remove the battery carefully using both hands. Car batteries can be quite heavy!
- Use a baking soda and water mixture or a battery cleaning product to remove corrosion around the battery tray and the hold-down clamp.
- Take the wire brush and cleaning solution and clean off the battery cable connectors.
- Place the brand-new battery in the battery tray. Make sure that it is secure by tightening the hold-down clamp.
- Before you connect the new battery’s positive and negative terminals, spray them with an anti-corrosion solution.
- Attach the battery cables to the battery terminals. Connect the red cable first.
- When all connections are secure, try to move the battery. If it doesn’t move at all, you’re all set.
- Start the engine to make sure the battery is connected properly.
Important note: When moving the battery, take extreme caution to avoid spilling battery acid. Battery acid is highly corrosive, and contact with battery acid can lead to chemical burns.
