What Type of Oil Does a Chevy Equinox Take?

2021 Chevy Equinox driving on a city street

For normal above-freezing temperatures, the ideal Chevy Equinox oil type is 5W-30 for most model years and engine types. This is the standard oil for most daily driven passenger vehicles, and is also the recommended Chevy Equinox oil. If you plan on doing a Chevy Equinox oil change when the weather is wintery, 0W-30 is advised for 2.0L Turbo Equinox models, and 0W-20 for 1.5L Turbo models.

All of the above-mentioned oils differ in how they handle cold temperatures, and your Equinox will still run with 5W-30 in all but the most extreme environments. If you have any questions about oil changes or any other service topics, feel free to get in touch with us here at Volume Chevrolet, near Griffin.

Synthetic vs. Conventional Oils: Which is Right for My Equinox?

Many McDonough drivers wonder what the difference is between the cheaper conventional oils and the more expensive synthetic alternatives. Simply put, conventional oil is more “naturally” made, and is cheaper to acquire, but the specially formulated synthetic oil lasts longer and provides better engine protection overall. Most drivers will be served just fine with conventional oil, though if you plan on using your vehicle for any strenuous task, such as racing, off-roading, or towing, synthetic oil is a good choice. If you want to take the utmost care of your vehicle, synthetic oil or even a synthetic oil blend could be worth a look.

What Happens if You Don’t Replace Your Oil?

Your engine oil is used to lubricate the rapidly moving and reciprocating parts of your engine. If the oil breaks down from the heat and wear caused by all that friction, and isn’t replaced over time, the engine’s internal components will eventually seize up altogether, and your engine will effectively be dead. To keep this from happening, change your oil at least once or twice a year.
